E-Bikes

Electric Bicycles: Dangers Abound

Every child's dream - freedom and self reliance with minimal effort.
Every parent's nightmare.- emergency room visits or that call from the police.

The risk of accidents are just the start of problems with E-bikes. They are fast, small and dangerous and:
.
1. We don't really have lanes on our roadways for 13 year old children on e-bikes traveling at 15-45 miles per hour. Sidewalks? Bike Lanes? Road lanes?
2. Children without driver's licenses don't know the rules of the road. Children are impulsive and easily distracted.
3. Children on E-bikes may show off to their friends and engage in dangerous behavior on the road.
4. Automobile drivers aren't happy about another danger on the road. It is bad enough that some states, like California no longer prohibit jaywalking, so individuals in dark clothing are not at fault if hit by a car at night when crossing in the middle of a dark road. Now we have more unlicensed and uninsured youthful motorists on the road!
5. Teens on E-bikes are now driving while intoxicated from alcohol, drugs and inhalants and are getting into accidents causing serious harm to themselves and other motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. Often times there is more than one person on the E-bike.
6. Children on E-bikes, especially in groups may act out in ways that are very dangerous and irresponsible. Road rage incidents are becoming common where a gang of children on E-bikes attack a motorist or their vehicle causing thousands of dollars of damage because they were yelled out to get out the intersection. There are developmental psychological principals at play that, when carefully considered, suggest that these devices are not appropriate for children.
7. Children can now travel miles away from their home without parental supervision and put themselves at risk of meeting up with unsafe individuals.
8. Children are now being attacked and having their expensive E-bike stolen from them.
9. E-bikes allowed in parks not only pose a nuisance to park visitors but can result in injuries.

Laws related to E-bike use have not yet caught up with critical need for legislati0n.
