Technology in Education:
Has Technology Put Institutional Convenience Over the Quality of Education?

It has been taken for granted that tablets and "educational" notebooks are now a core necessity in the classroom and at home for study. The Covid-19 epidemic assured every child had one of these devices. The textbooks are now online. Assignments are online. Grades are online. For many young people, even school is online. How has that worked out? Not well.

Perhaps it's time to rethink the general purpose computer or tablet being used in the classroom and for education in general. Is it appropriate?  Is it necessary? We know that it can be very distracting both at home and at school. Despite the fact that these devices are supposed to have restrictions, students find ways around them..  They are playing chess, watching videos and even chatting with their friends online.. Teachers now have another responsibility - to police children's use of the devices the school has given the students!  Another issue that has gained a lot of attention has been allowing children to bring smartphones to school. This has been a serious problem and thankfully reversing these bad policies has been gaining support by the public.

The town of Riihimaki (population 30,000) in Finland has given this grand experiment with computers in the classroom an 'F' grade and is going back to tech-free classroom instruction with printed textbooks.

Resources

This section is intended to present resources to help reverse the learning loss of the past years and restore quality study habits. Perhaps the introduction of charter schools with tech restricted classrooms can help school districts decide if putting tech for education back in the bottle will help. We will certainly be following Riihimaki.
